Tulpan (Coming Soon)

Starring: Askhat Kuchinchirekov, Samal Yeslyamova, Ondasyn Besibasov, Tulepbergen Baisakalov

Director: Sergey Dvortsevoy

Synopsis:

Acclaimed documentarian Sergey Dvortsevoy's debut narrative feature, TULPAN, is a work of extraordinary filmmaking bravado, an exhilaratingly alive and sweet-natured fairytale set in the barren landscape of a Kazakh steppe, an environment where only shepherds live. Asa (Askhat Kuchinchirekov) returns from military service to live with his sister, Samal (Samal Yeslyamova), her husband, Ondas (Ondasyn Besikbasov), and their three children. Asa's dream is to have his own flock of sheep, but his boss tells him that until he gets married, his wish will never be granted. The only trouble is that in this particular case, the candidates for potential wife can be counted on one finger. Her name is Tulpan, and though he's never seen her entire face, Asa is certain that she is the one for him. Unfortunately, she doesn't appear to feel the same way, complaining that his ears are too big. Yet Asa remains hopeful, envisioning the day when his dream will come true. Dvortsevoy's background as a documentary director is put to masterly use here. He refuses to be anything but authentic, to the point where he captures some of the most miraculous footage the screen has ever seen. The highlight is a transcendent 10-minute lamb birth that occurs in an unbroken take. But this is just one of the many extended shots in which Dvortsevoy appears to be controlling the most difficult to wrangle forces of nature: weather, animals, and children. Four years in the making, TULPAN is filmmaking of the highest order, a Herzogian display of directorial bravado.

Delhi 6

Director :
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Music : AR Rahman
Lyrics : Prasoon Joshi
Starring :
Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Om Puri, Rishi Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman

Rakeysh Opmrakash Mehra's DELHI 6 is not your typical Bollywood flick. It has a theatrical twist in its treatment and hence some will find the amalgamation of the two mediums jarring. But the message the director is trying to get across is that of personal freedom, learning to say ''No'' and fighting the demons within. If looked at from this perspective, you will have no issues with the film. If you have notions of this being a typical Bollywood 'naach gaana' 'rona dhona' masala movie, you will be disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised and quite enjoyed the treatment and the message that comes across. Your views might differ.

But I have only one question to ask Rakeysh; why did Abhishek have to don the monkey suit in the end? Then again, I would answer that by saying the director does not want to give any easy answers. He wants the audience to think with him. So you see, as you replay the film in your mind, answers keep coming back. Depends how you want to view the film.

CHECK OUT: DELHI 6 is about characters, not stars!

Abhishek Bachchan is Roshan who visits India for the first time with his grandmother (Waheeda Rehman). Dadi has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease in New York, and she wants to breathe her last in Delhi. Roshan agrees to accompany her. Bewildered at first, with a complete culture shock, Roshan is soon sucked into the life in Delhi with its myriad characters, played by an assortment of artistes, whose connection or relationship to Dadi or Roshan is not clear. All one can gather is that they belong to the same locality and have grown up together. There's also, the Hindu-Muslim twist.

Roshan meets Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) a free-spirited girl, who is busy making plans of her own, while her father (Om Puri) has his own agenda; that off marrying her off to the first available boy. There's also masakali the pigeon. Bittu tells Roshan that her father (Om Puri) has clipped her wings (masakali's) so that the pigeon cannot fly. This scene explains her plight, and of her wanting to take flight.

There's also Ali Uncle (Rishi Kapoor), who was in love with Roshan's mother, but who never mustered enough courage to tell her so. Roshan and Ali Uncle have a strong bonding and Rakeysh portrays it beautifully. In between all this there's a Hindu-Muslim clash with a Hindu fakir stating that there was a mandir in the densely populated Muslim area over 300 years ago and that's the reason why there's 'Monkey trouble' in this place. That's enough spark to light a communal fire. Roshan who is half-Hindu and half-Muslim is bewildered at the goings-on and wants to leave for America in the next flight with his Dadi, who was earlier adamant on staying put. Then, he realizes that the pull to stay in India is too strong. He has fallen in love with Bittu.

The movie has a subtle message. Its romance, which is also the heart of the film, is subtle too. Ditto the violence and the huge divide between upper and lower caste. Everything is downplayed but yet, wonderfully rings out loud.

CHECK OUT: DELHI 6 Music Review

The music by A R Rahman needs no praise. Masakali is a huge chartbuster and the performances too are top notch. Be it Tanvi Azmi in her short role or Om Puri. Abhishek Bachchan as a first timer to Indian soil is believable, with his Americanised accent. Sonam Kapoor is absolutely adorable. The girl is a rocker. But for me the actor who stands out head and shoulders in this film is Rishi Kapoor. A rock solid performance. Sadly, it's left unexplored.

There are a lot of monkeys we are fighting with; while there are others, the politicians let loose which in the end makes a monkey out of us!

Seriously, this is no monkey business. You will come back enriched.

Ek (Coming Soon)

Director : Sangeeth Sivan
Music : Pritam
Lyrics : Shabbir Ahmed
Starring :
Nana Patekar, Bobby Deol, Shriya Saran, Chunky Pandey, Jackie Shroff, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Jaspal Bhatti and Gurpreet Guggi

After churning out back-to-back slapstick comical entertainers (KYA KOOL HAI HUM and APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY), director Sangeeth Sivan shifts genre to action-packed drama in stylishly packed EK-THE POWER OF ONE. This Bobby Deol and Nana Patekar starrer promises some breath- taking dare-devil internationally branded action stunts (Action-Peter Heins), with music turning out to be submissive factor. Pritam Chakraborty, man behind dozen musical hits in recent few years, makes all musical happenings for this hi-octane action packed thriller. As per subject and convention, action flicks have never been high on melodic quotient and has just played to the situations of the flick. Can Pritam's immaculate prowess be able to spell out success for this action potboiler? Let's get into the facts by plugging on ''play'' button...

CHECK OUT: EK-THE POWR OF ONE Movie Preview

Pritam makes a flamboyant arrival of ''bhangra'' celebration that comes all the way with bombastic ''dhol'' beats and vibrant orchestrations in loud ''n'' peppy ''Sambhale''. Sukhwinder Singh's vociferously throaty and Sunidhi Chauhan's seductively crooned vocals are at the helm of affairs that gets electrified with thumping ''dhol'' beats and pulsating arrangements. Like all Pritam's major ''bhangra'' hits, it has racy rap rendition with festive Shabbir Ahmed's lyrics setting out a tempo for a grandiloquent celebration. After delivering out ostentatiously colorful Punjabi hits like ''Mauja Hi Mauja'' (JAB WE MET), Pritam maintains his top slot in this upbeat genre of ''bhangra-mixes'' and delivers out a terrific dancing track.

The album misses out a flagrantly loud ''club'' remix number but still this ''dhol-dhamaka'' number has enough ammunition to fire up the floors. Bombastic!!!

''Sona Lagda'', a traditionally Punjabi folklore stylized mellowed romantic melody brings out the slender feminine emotions of village belle about his beloved in Shashwati's subtle vocals. Pritam's hilly music sounds conventional in rhythmical flows and chorals but the tenderness in Shashwati's voice and the subtleness of willowy arrangements makes it an audible preposition. Shabbir Ahmed's lyrical works are spontaneous as well as engrossing in narrating out the demure sentiments and it can well be an added asset in smoothening out narrative flows of the flick.

view EK THE POWER OF ONE movie stills

Its routine sounding ''club'' remix version comes like a surprise visitor as it defies the tender moods of the song. It would be wise if a smoothening ''lounge'' remix would have been added in the album to add extra charms in its slenderness.

Abhijeet, a prominent figure in Pritam's major hit track ''Lamha Lamha'' (GANGSTER), makes his solitary presence as his voice gushes out with loud stream of rock music stylized arrangements in impressive sounding ''Tum Saath Ho''. This tantalizing composition about lovers falling in love with each other strikes chords with ''Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai'' (WOH LAMHE) with a strong South Asian music affixation in its arrangements. Shreya Ghoshal makes an appreciable appearance as her svelte rendition moves in tandem with Abhijeet's voice and streamline to perfection with peppy arrangements. Once again, Pritam's music lacks innovation but carries enough enthralling power that can lure listeners with its upbeat concoction of instrumentals with vocals.

CHECK OUT: Nana Patekar - Now in a dude American look

Following the tradition of sporty and belligerent title tracks of action flicks, a volatile and hi-octane action-packed hard-rock number emerges out, sensitizing the killer feel of EK-THE POWER OF ONE in flagrantly earsplitting ''Bang Bang''. Like ''Bull's Eye'' (APNE), it carries off its inspiration from famous Hollywood's hit number ''Eye of the Tiger'' (ROCKY) with heavy loaded electric guitar strumming and enthused percussions to give it a loud hard-metal rock'' appeal. After Suraj Jagan's impressive loud rendition in this genre, Rana Mazumdar screeches out his lungs to extreme to boisterously pump out the aggressive feel of the situation as well as the caricatures of the lead protagonists of the flick. It carries out a stamp of hot-blooded background score and is expected to appreciate the enthrall quotient of this hi-octane thriller.

EK-THE POWER OF ONE comes out as decent fare in the genre of action flicks with no big major surprises. Pritam regenerates some of his finest tunes and rhythms to accentuate out romantic impulse in this action-packed saga. Its brightest aspect lies in vibrant sounding ''Sambhale'' and somber sounding ''Sona Lagda'' and they will surely be appreciating out the glam quotient of the flick while ''Tum Saath Ho'' and ''Bang Bang'' proves to be effectual situational scores.

Straight (Coming Soon)

''Pinu Patel ki Tedhi Medhi Love Story'', a tagline that talks more about wacky straightforwardness in love life of simpleton ''Pinu Patel'' rather than a conventional Bollywood love story strikes as fresh wave of comical madness for multiplexes this season. This Parvati Balagopalan directed STRAIGHT brings out another madcap flavor of hilarious experimental cinema with music that has meaningful hues to the theme than trendy ''remix-culture'' madness in it.

After making insignificant presence in low budget entertainers like BHEJA FRY, MITHYA and SIDDARTH-THE PRISONER, upcoming composer Sagar Desai finally makes his presence felt through this album with the music that promises to connect amiably with its striking upbeat feel of rock music to its prospective urbane listeners. The album tries to be innovative for lauding out the vocal finesse of Suraj Jagan in all five original soundtracks and making it a ''one-man-show'' on credits. Can STRAIGHT be as ''straight to success'' for struggling Sagar Desai''? Does the enthused rock musical feel have the tenacity of making this a ''cut above the rest'' album in its cadre? Let's get STRAIGHT into the musical facts...!

CHECK OUT: STRAIGHT Movie Preview

Sagar Desai's tangy youthful rock feel makes the mood merrier in typical Indi-pop musical textures that connect vibrantly with the urbane feel of buddy-bonding in lively sounding ''Saanson Ka Rukna''. Suraj Jagan's impressive maneuvers of club-crooner make the maximum racy impact as it strikes flammable concoction with synchronized rock-music feel. Its vigorous spontaneity excels tremendously in Subrat Sinha's wordings where Suraj's vocals make it an all party soothing number. Sagar Desai's prowess in rock music aesthetics are perfectly balanced with arrangements that amalgamates well within the terrains of well crafted lyrical moves and vocalist pristine rendition. The rip-roaring hook-line (''Pa-Pa-Pa-Ra-Ra'') benchmark's the peculiar ''yuppie'' feel of the flick and its catchiness in rollicking rhythmical flows can well make it the most bankable attribute of this album.

Loud bass guitar riffs along with peppy arrangements sets the pace for a communion of romantic happenings in appealingly soft rock ballad feel soundtrack ''Humse Jo Churaiye Humko Hee''. This situational sounding number works on well versed lyrics by Subrat Sinha with strong rock music instrumental thrive in zany guitar strumming and piercing percussions backdrop. Suraj Jagan consolidates his ''rock-star'' singing spree with the number that can be presumed to be effective background score for the spectrum of emotions it conveys in its noteworthy rendition. It sounds almost analogously sentimental in mood to Pritam's passionately conceived ''Rishtey'' (LIFE IN A METRO) with remarkable command over rock guitar jamming and maddening percussive display.

After two competent back-to-back upbeat rock musical stuff, the melodic appeal swivels to the 60's bygone golden era with soothing jazz flows conquering all emotions in the relaxing ''Kya Hua Hoo Hoo''. Suraj Jagan shows his great control in mellowed varying tones as the song unravels many moods and gestures of romanticism. Like ''Muskura'' (DASAVIDANIYA), composer Sagar Desai tries to resurrect Shankar Jaikishen's mystical aura of eternal romance with soft piano drills and trumpet sounds sounding large to evoke pathos.

''Love Love Love'', a partying and feasting fast paced number has an intrinsically ''Goan'' musical thump that exudes the ultimate exultant feel of bunch of youngsters on floor. This time Suraj Jagan's smashing vocals gets into beach-singer composure with a decorum that connects well with the passionate feel of thriving bangs and loud cheers.

The merry-making ''Goan'' beach musical thumps remind couple of Remo's stylized pop songs and this one too captures ecstatic and jubilant moments. It's again a striking situational score that adds to the glam quotient but still lacks the ''killer'' chartbusting feel.

CHECK OUT: Gul prefers to be selective

After outrageously harsh ''Zahreeley'' (ROCK ON), Suraj Jagan makes another ''hard-rock'' hysterical vocal move in boisterously yelling ''Run Run Run''. It goes out straight out for ''hard-rock'' aficionados who have passion for bands like METALLICA, NIRVANA or India's very own INDIAN OCEAN for its enthusiastically inundated rock guitar strumming, riffing and jams that makes violent concoction with ear-splitting percussive moves. Despite its intimidating situational appeal about protagonist running for his destination, it has something to cheer for hard-rock lovers and do play loud if you have passion for ''hard-metal rock'' songs in the past.

Upcoming and promising Sagar Desai has shown skillfulness and ''killer instinct'' to succeed and excel in his first visible and audible solo release album STRAIGHT. Like its peculiarly different sounding simple title, it succeeds to deliver ''hat-ke'' musical substance with music that caters to the likings of urbane youth. Desai has shown dexterity in lauding out quality rock musical works in soundtracks like ''Saanson Ka Rukna'', ''Humse Jo Churaiya Humko'' and ''Run Run Run'' but still falls short much in expectation of making it big on chartbusters.

8 x 10 Tasveer (Coming Soon)

Director : Nagesh Kukunoor
Music : Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant, Bohemia and Neeraj Shridhar
Lyrics : Irfan Siddiqui, Sameer and Bohemia
Starring :
Akshay Kumar, Ayesha Takia, Sharmila Tagore, Benjamin Gilani, Anant Mahadevan and Javed Jaffery.

Nagesh Kukunoor, maverick director and actor, has always been known for making films which are away from the league. Though he had directed some successful and critically acclaimed films like HYDERABAD BLUES, ROCKFORD and 3 DEEWAREIN, he became a known name in the Hindi film industry through Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts Production, IQBAL, which saw the debut of the versatile Shreyas Talpade. From the critically acclaimed 3 DEEWAREIN, the inspirational IQBAL, to his next, the heartwarming DOR, the rib tickler, BOMBAY TO BANGKOK and his upcoming films like AASHAYEIN and supernatural thriller, 8 X10 TASVEER, there is one common factor that binds all these completely diverse movies. And that is music by the new face of the music industry, the talented duo, Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant. Nagesh needs to be applauded for spotting their talent so early on and sticking to them and the sole reason as per Nagesh himself, ''I wanted songs that stood out from the clutter and something that was different from the usual that is being heard today.'' Salim-Sulaiman has had a tremendous year with Madhur Bhandarkar's FASHION and the All Time Blockbuster, Shah Rukh Khan starrer, RAB NE BANA DI JODI which has definitely catapulted them to the top bracket. Their ''Mar Jaava'' and ''Haule Haule'' is still ruling the hearts and the charts. So, let's see if the duo repeats the magic and give us a score to remember.

Pulsating rocking and rolling beats and enticing chorals herald ''Nazaara Hai'' and one is stumped! Is it Vishal-Shekhar or A.R.Rahman, no its Salim-Sulaiman! The style is a majestic blend of V-S's rock style and A. R. Rahman's lavish musical orchestrations coupled with the maestro's haunting crescendo. But in all this milieu, Salim-Sulaiman chart out a distinct flavour, unheard before and the result is an awesome track that spices up senses and sends the adrenalin pumping. Vishal Dadlani in his rock avatar, a la Jim Morrison is spellbinding. What a choice of singer, one must add, the original rock master Vishal Dadlani of Vishal-Shekhar fame. True blue rock star! Irfan Siddiqui's lyrics are so apt and yet so dramatic that the impact is a heady one. All lovers of hard rock music will gorge; in fact binge on the song that has all the elements of hard rock, from superb orgasmic guitaring and heady percussions to mind-blowing singing by Vishal, a la Doors style composition. Indian rock is certainly coming of age and Vishal Shekhar and Salim Sulaiman are the two composer duo to look forward to. The song should be used as a background support in tense and edge of the seat moments or during the rolling credits or even at the fag end of the movie.

The remix version of ''Nazaara Hai'' is at first heard a normal routine remix, but what comes out as a pleasant change and surprise is the innovation by the lead singer. The singing is a bit slower in this fast tempo remix, a contrast to what we are used to, and picks up pace later on.

CHECK OUT: Working with Nagesh was the most challenging task

Salim-Sulaiman gave us ''Mar Jaava'' last year, and with ''Haafiz Khuda'' they have another mind blowing love ballad, which slowly but surely has the capability to engulf the listeners, who have a slightly discerning taste when it comes to romantic songs. The composition has a tune that is slightly drawn out, a bit on the slower side and may not appeal to all, but two things stand out loud and clear in this minimal musical arrangement song. And they are the lead vocalists, both male and female and lyrics. First things first. The rendition by Mohit Chauhan and Tulsi Kumar is absolutely top class, especially Mohit who is slowly cementing his place at the top. Tulsi too is superb, she has used voice modulations to complement Mohit's base vocals and that really stands out. But she has to work on her Urdu diction, which is bad and jarring. And so it's Mohit who walks away with all the accolades with his characteristic well loved, inebriated style of singing and his base vocals, which convey that dreamy and heady feeling of romance. Lyrics by Irfan Siddiqui too complement the singing and simple Urdu/Hindi words add to the beauty and charm and they are easy on the lips too. Enchanting!!

Sikandar (Coming Soon)

Director : Piyush Jha
Music : Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Justin Uday and Sandesh Shandilya
Lyrics : Neelesh Misra and Prasoon Joshi
Starring :
Parzan Dastur, Ayesha Kapoor, Madhavan and Sanjay Suri

Big Pictures have become synonymous with good music and their last two ventures, LUCK BY CHANCE and 13B both had some lovely compositions by the choosy talented and the extremely versatile Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Here S-E-L comes as guest composers and Justin_Uday (who had done a good job that went unnoticed in
Shiney Ahuja's HIJACK) have been given the bulk of the responsibility. Sandesh Shandilya of KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM fame too chips in with his version of ''Gulon Mein''. The movie set in Kashmir, with terrorism as its backdrop and how it affects the innocent who are exploited and go astray is the theme. Award winning director Sudhir Mishra (CHAMELI, HAZAARON KHWAISHEN AISI and KHOYA KHOYA CHAAND) co-produces this film and Piyush Jha is the director. Sudhir's projects have always had some outstanding musical scores and naturally expectations surmount from this album. So, without waiting more let's switch on the play button and see what lies ahead.

Let's get on to the most talked about composition of the lot, ''Dhoop Ke Sikke''. By now everyone conversant with Bollywood and its music will know how much moved was the lyricist Prasoon Joshi when he saw the film, SIKANDAR, the special screening of which was done so that Prasoon could pen a theme song. And definitely so touched was Prasoon that he not only penned the song, he did not charge a single penny from the co-producer, Sudhir Mishra. Awesome lyrics which can move a mountain. Set to a lovely flowing tune by guest composers, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the song is an amalgamation of nursery rhyme tune and typical S-E-L style. A throwback to the TAARE ZAMEEN PAR numbers. The song talks about innocence and urges to leave the kids innocent and carefree. Shankar and Anusha Mani. are absolutely superb with their rendition as they so very effectively convey the message through some very expressive singing. Subdued singing by Anusha (of ''Lazy Lamhe'' fame) deserves applause and Shankar's typical semi-classical alaaps too are mind-blowing. The chorus is outstanding; the rock elements that have been incorporated are fantastic. Praising the lyrics is a very difficult matter as Prasoon has excelled himself and no words big and befitting enough can be written in praise of the master craftsman, a man who has brought about such a beautiful and refreshing change to the lyrics scenario in Bollywood, which was getting too stereotyped and filmy. Definitely a sample of the awesome lyrics by Prasoon will drive home the point ''Bahut jaldi dupatte odhna sikhla rahe hai hum, Kyon zindagi ko raaste milwa rahein hain hum, Woh pallu se chipak kar maa ki chalti thi toh achchi thi, Akela chhodhkar usko kya kahna chaah rahien hai hum, Ek gehri neend se jagane do use.'' Amazing! Kudos to (especially) Prasoon, SEL and Anusha.

CHECK OUT: SIKANDAR Movie Preview

A music video to promote the film has been recently shot featuring the truly gifted trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy performing in front of a live crowd with the clippings of the film.

''Gulon Mein'', justifiably appears as two versions and who minds as both the versions are simply spectacular and undoubtedly the best numbers of the album. Though the serene version by Justin-Uday is better, both in terms of musical arrangements and singing. In the serene version, Justin-Uday use simple guitar strums which are so effective that they have the capacity to transport the listeners to a world full of romance and love. Mohit Chauhan's inebriated vocals are a delight, and Pritam's ''Tum Se Hi'' (JAB WE MET) shades can be seen here. The number is haunting, bewitching and truly a romantic treat which would be loved by all. Gen X and the older lot too can find something to suit their individual tastes. After ''Masakkali' Mohit has another ace up his sleeve with ''Gulon Mein''.

True to its title the upbeat version by Sandesh Shandilya is peppier, more zestful with added beats. It's more synthetic with synthesizers, keyboards and guitar used in plenty to give the romantic touch. K.K does the needful although frankly the very talented K.K is overpowered by Mohit with his superlative singing.

New age lyricist Neelesh Misra dedicates 'Gulon Mein'' to Faiz Ahmad Faiz, a renowned poet whose ''Gulon mein rang bhare, Bade nau bahaar chale, Chale bhi aao ke gulshan ka karobaar chale'', has been sung by legendary ghazal singer from Pakistan, Mehdi Hasan and is still a rage. Neelesh uses his own superb lyrics in the 'anatara' and does full justice as his words are romance personified!

Since the film is set in Kashmir, Muslim influences in the album surface with a spiritual number called ''Arzoo', which is a traditional 'naat', a devotional number/ hymn sung in praise of the prophet, especially during certain prayer services ('milaad'). And very intelligently music directors Justin-Uday have roped in a young Kashmiri boy from Uru, Mehrajuddin to render this delightful track which would be savoured by the lovers of 'natiya' compositions. Mehraj is spellbinding as he effortlessly sings and the 'naat' is capable of moving the believers.

''Allah Hoo'', instantly reminds one of legendary Pakistani singer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's composition by the same name but its not so. Though this number too will fall under the same category, albeit the 'qawwali' part is replaced by a more devotional kind of singing. The duo, Hrishikesh Kamrekar and Yash Navrekar impress with their rendition. The chorus ''Allah Hoo'' needed to be more vibrant, as the slow rhythm is a bit of a dampener, although the fresh, youthful vocal of the singer needs to be commended. Kumaar as the lyricist does a good job in bringing out the turmoil and the conflicts in mind, questioning the traumatic situation and asking God as to what they have done to deserve this. Justin-Uday use minimal background music, a few drums and other percussion instruments to drive home the point and seriousness of the issue, the gravity of the situation prevailing. Mostly the song relies on the fresh vocals and the background chorus, which will definitely serve as a good situational track.

CHECK OUT: SIKANDAR is an anti-war film

''Manzaraat' can be classified as an item/dance number as it's quite rhythmic. Though the tune is very heard before and is inspired by the famous holi song, ''Bhaagi Re Bhaagi Re Brij Bala, Kanha Ne Pakda Rang Dala'', and nothing to write about. Even the arrangements are not very interesting Shilpa Rao's husky vocals are in sync with the folksy nature of the song and she is adequate. The song is quite a letdown from the excellent line up that we have had so far.

''Chaal Apni'', a situational track that sums up the attitude and confidence of the youth in a nice rhythmic number. Hamsika Iyer and Hrishikesh Kamerker sing well as a pair, their youthful vocals gel together and the over confident attitude of the protagonist is conveyed by some professional singing. Although the tune chosen by the composers could have been better, more inspiring. A number that instantly rings a bell is Rahman's ''Awara Bhavre' which was in the same corridor but was more purposeful as well as peppy.

To cut a long story short, this is one album that needs to be appreciated, and to be promoted heavily by the makers as it has all the essential ingredients to become another ROCK ON for Big Music, so classy are all its numbers. Of course the best of the lot are ''Gulon Mein'', ''Dhoop Ke Sikke'' and ''Arzoo'' while ''Allah Hoo' and ''Chaal Apni'' can fall in the good to average category. However both ''Gulon Mein'' and ''Dhoop ke Sikke'' are worth the money put in to buy the album. Go and get it. Definitely the best of the year after, DELHI 6 and that speaks volumes for the album!

The villagers were initially happy to see the colourful British flag.

Suddenly the situation changes. A British truck arrives carrying the dead bodies of 10 village youths taken to the city by Bruisers. As per the British procedures these dead bodies of Indian soldiers died in a battle were brought wrapped in British Flag. By seeing the blood soaked British Flag the villagers get infuriated.

Firaaq

Director : Nandita Das
Starring :
Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Sanjay Suri, Shahana Goswami, Raghuvir Yadav, Tisca Chopra

A work of fiction based on a thousand true stories.' That's a line that hits you hard, which comes on screen before the movie begins. And when a truckload of dead bodies is emptied in a Muslim graveyard, the reality of fiction strikes a chord!

Nandita Das who makes her debut as a director does not dwell on one telling moment. That's the forte of this movie; it makes a point, then moves on, leaving you to draw your own conclusions. And FIRAAQ is a compilation of many such true stories, which has helped this work of fiction. One look and you can see that there has been a lot of research gone into this project. The people who have been highlighted, be it the Muslim husband and his Hindu wife who are preparing to relocate to Delhi; or the Hindu wife battling with guilt for not opening her doors to a helpless woman chased by a mob; or even the little boy, Mohsin, who walks aimlessly on the streets in search of his father, after his entire family has been murdered.

CHECK OUT: Will Nandita Das' film FIRAAQ meet with success?

The movie ends abruptly with the little boy walking into a transit camp, refusing to play with children his age and looking aimlessly at the camera as the lights go out.

The film is based on a 24-hour period; one month after the riots broke out in Gujarat. Most of the stories have no connection with the other; they are individual set pieces, designed to drive home the point of the hopelessness of hate and violence. Of its disastrous after-effects, of the deep, traumatic mental scars it leaves behind. It also drives home the point of 'mob mentality', which has no meaning or direction.

CHECK OUT: FIRAAQ is not about mindless entertainment

Kudos to Nandita for tackling such a controversial subject. It's filmmakers like these with steely resolve who surprise many with a conscience-tweaking product.

Barah Aana

Director : Raja Menon
Music : Shri
Lyrics : Raja Menon
Starring :
Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Raaz, Arjun Mathur, Tannishtha Chatterjee

Naseeruddin Shah gives a lesson in acting in BARAH AANA, which is worth a million bucks. That he is a brilliant actor is a given. His performances in the past and the more recent ones have had the cynics, critics and his fans watching in rapt attention when he comes on screen. In this film, he does not speak for a full three-quarter of the film. But his acting speaks volumes. No, he is not playing a dumb character, but leaves everyone dumbfounded with his super body language that portrays every emotion he is going through.

Another performer who hits out at you is Tanisha Chatterjee. This chatterbox of a character who is in love with Aman (Arjun Mathur, very competent) leaves no doubt about her abilities as an actor. She portrays the pesky girl who is besotted by the good-looking Aman in her chawl to such a believable extent that you can feel the pulse of her emotions at the common tap, where they always bump into each other.

CHECK OUT: AAMIR director's script is the USP of BARAH AANA

Then there is Vijay Raaz, who as the watchman of a housing society, brings to light, the plight of thousands of migrants who land in the city in the hope of making a living. A security guard is now the surest way of landing a job. No, you don't have to be 'super fit', or have any basic knowledge of security. Just switching the tap on and off is enough along with running errands for the society members. Double duty now seems to be the bane of housing societies who always find their guards sleeping not knowing that the poor man has been up since early morning!

Director Raja Menon begins well in depicting the lives of three such migrants who live in the same chawl. Naseeruddin Shah (Shukla) is a driver; Vijay Raaz plays Yadav while Arjun is a waiter at a local cafe. They all lead diverse lives, making ends meet with what they get at the end of the month. Shukla is being ridiculed by his boss's wife who leaves no opportunity to insult him, while Aman is madly in love with a foreign guest at his cafe, Kate (Violante Placido). He in turn, is being chased by Rani (Tanisha Chaterjee).

Yadav has a situation back in the village where he has to send money for his ailing father. No one at the housing society comes forward to help and it is left upto Shukla to help him out. But fate plays a cruel trick on Yadav as he is robbed at the station.

Forlorn, he spends time sitting at a food stall when three drunks drive up for a bite. They call out to him but Yadav does not respond. One smart guy gets out to 'teach' him a lesson but ends up being the victim. He gets a solid whack from Yadav that sends him reeling on the floor. Until here, Menon has got the track right. After this, the screenplay takes a nose-dive.

CHECK OUT: BARAH AANA impossible without Naseer!

Yadav gets the unconscious man at home (there was no reason to do so). But I guess this was to support the madness, Menon was to step down to. Yadav calls the man's family and tells them he is unconscious. Thinking he has been kidnapped, they force him to take money. Yadav agrees and makes a quick Rs 30,000 without the knowledge of the other two. It's only when he goes to give them their share of Rs 10,000 that they realise what he has been up to. They then agree to make it their business to kidnap people and ask ransom.

While the first half of the film is thoroughly enjoyable, the second half slides rapidly. To Menon's credit, he does succeed in touching upon everyday situations that you can immediately relate to.

Watch it for the first rate performances.

Knowing

WHAT IT’S ABOUT?

In the late '50s, a group of elementary students put futuristic drawings in a time capsule that is then buried on school grounds. One overly obsessed kid, Lucinda, goes her own way by writing hundreds of mysterious, seemingly non-sensical numbers on her entry. Fifty years later, it’s dug up and comes into the possession of Caleb, the young son of John Koestler, a recent widower and astro-physics professor, who becomes obsessed with the papers Caleb has brought home from class. He soon discovers the random digits are actually not-so-thinly disguised dates (including 91101 of course) for “future” disasters, and there are clearly three of those dates yet to come. Although nobody believes his ramblings about this code for impending doom, a nearby plane crash proves he is on to something so ominous the fate of the world could be in jeopardy. With all hell about to break loose, the prof takes matters into his own hands.

WHO’S IN IT?

Just a couple of years ago, Nicolas Cage starred in Next as a magician who could see into the future and had to prevent a nuclear attack. Now he’s at it again as an MIT professor who also has clues to future catastrophes and also is out to prevent the inevitable. And of course, in the National Treasure films, he latched on to maps that had contained similarly dark, deeply held secrets. Nic clearly likes “knowing” stuff before the rest of us, and he’s quite believable even if some of the circumstances in his latest sci-fi adventure are really out there -- literally. Cage somehow makes you buy into this stuff, which is key to the ultimate success of the flick. As the key kids, Chandler Canterbury, as Caleb, and Lara Robinson, as Lucinda, (and later Abby, Lucinda’s granddaughter) are properly eerie and haunted-looking. Rose Byrne is also along for the ride as Lucinda’s grown daughter, who is able to provide goosebump-inducing information that the numbers alone can’t. There’s also some dead-on creepy emoting from D.G. Maloney as a quietly foreboding stranger who seems to be following Caleb.

WHAT’S GOOD?

Unlike some recent movies of this type with nothing on the agenda but pure mayhem, “Knowing” delves into the bigger issues of why we are all here providing something other than just big explosions to talk about on the way home from the multiplex. Director Alex Proyas (I, Robot, Dark City, The Crow) certainly knows how to pull off complex action set-pieces, but he and his screenwriters also seem to be genuinely interested in exploring the meaning behind the madness.

WHAT’S BAD?

Some of the more pedantic dialogue Cage is given can be groan-inducing, but since he plays John as a total believer, we can forgive it. Also, the film falls victim to a final act that veers into typical disaster movie territory and isn’t as compelling as the first two thirds which try to keep the premise at least marginally credible. At two hours, it probably could have been tightened anyway.

FAVORITE SCENE:

The rain-soaked plane crash sequence with its gritty hand-held photography is riveting to watch and one of the most frightening depictions of a jetliner disaster put on film yet.

GO OUT AND GET POPCORN WHEN ...

If you are really squeamish, it might be worth "knowing" that you should take breaks in the big disaster sequences as the CGI effects can get pretty violent and graphic, particularly for a PG-13 movie.

Aloo Chaat

Director : Robby Grewal
Music : RDB, Xulfi, Vipin Mishra, Mehfuz Maruf
Lyrics : RDB, Xulfi, Vipin Mishra, Syed Gulrez
Starring :
Aftab Shivdasani, Aamna Shariff, Linda Arsenio, Kulbhushan

The headline says it all, Dhimaag Chaat! Mirchi Movies have come up with yet another dud! The story is weak, the acting below average and the cast just not upto the mark.

Get a load of this: The story is based in Delhi. The family is happy that their boy is returning from America. Unknown to him, preparations are on to find him a bride. But boy already has a Muslim girlfriend back in the US. So boy and uncle decide to stage an act where they will hire a firang girl to play his girlfriend, and get his actual girlfriend to come to his house as her friend, and make her win his parents heart while the firang runs riot and makes his family hate her.

All this is done by the girl to make the boy's family accept her. But what about the girl's family? Don't they have to accept the boy? Does not her family have any say in the matter? Or does she have no family at all? Director saab, did you not look into this aspect of the film?Actually, there is not much the cast could have done; there was no script in the first place.

I Love You, Man

WHAT IT’S ABOUT?

For real estate broker Peter Klaven, the bride wasn’t hard to land; it’s finding a best man that’s proving the real challenge. After he gets engaged to sweet Zooey, he realizes he has no close male friendships so he sets off on a series of “man dates” to rectify the situation until he finally stumbles upon Sydney Fife, a care-free bachelor and Peter’s polar opposite. An immediate best-buddy connection is formed as the two bond to Rush music and engage in honest mano et mano conversation. But when the bromance gets a little too intense, it causes ripples in his relationship with Zooey and threatens the wedding.

WHO’S IN IT?

With a cast who mainly cut their teeth in TV sitcoms and improv, this is can’t-miss comedy, providing the best role Paul Rudd has had to date. Playing Peter as the ultimate female-loving straight guy, a potential bride’s dream because he likes to cuddle up on the couch and watch chick flicks like Chocolat, Rudd is hilarious, especially later on as he tries the male-bonding thing with Sydney -- using hip phrases and non-sequiturs he is incapable of uttering with any level of competence. There’s a grounded sweetness to Rudd in this role, and he never loses sight of the character. Rudd and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) are sensationally funny together -- the best movie buddy team in years. That’s largely because Segel also is down-to-earth in a role that could have soared over the top but never does. The two are always believable, and that’s key to making the comedy work as well as it does. Rashida Jones is refreshingly likeable and sweetly understanding, if frustrated, as Peter’s fiancĂ©e. As her BFFs are: Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl), who is always battling with her hubby (a riotous Jon Favreau), and Sarah Burns, as the awkwardly man-hungry Hailey, are highly amusing. SNL’s Andy Samberg is surprisingly understated as Peter’s gay brother, and there are nice moments from J.K Simmons (Juno) and Jane Curtin as their parents. And watch out for Thomas Lennon who steals his few scenes as Doug, a spurned early “man date” of Peter’s. The original Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno also turns up as himself in a wryly amusing running gag.

WHAT’S GOOD?

This is a broad comic premise, but it’s never allowed to careen out of control, allowing everyone to create three-dimensional human beings despite the hijinks going on around them. The bits with Rudd and Segel jamming on Rush songs are great and so is the endless stream of corny catchphrases such as Rudd’s "we’re just chillaxin’" and Segel’s "Dude Von Dudenstein."

WHAT’S BAD?

Considering the smart instinctual comic chops that writer/director John Hamburg (Along Came Polly) displays here, he could have cut back on the raunch, which gets piled on a little thick at times for the film’s own good; although compared to last week’s dreadful buddy bomb Miss March, this is Disney stuff.

FAVORITE SCENE:

There are too many to name, but the Chinese restaurant engagement dinner is a comic knockout, particularly when it comes to Segel’s toast -- full of thinly disguised and totally inappropriate sexual innuendo

Duplicity

WHAT IT’S ABOUT?

Claire is an attractive CIA operative, and Ray is an M16 agent who simultaneously leave their Governmental spy activities in the dust to try and profit from a battle between two rival multi-national corporations both trying to launch a new product that will transform the world and make billions. Their goal is to secure the top-secret formula and get a patent before they are outsmarted. While their respective egomaniacal CEOs engage in an unending battle of wills and one-upmanship, Claire and Ray start out conning and playing one another in a clever game of industrial espionage that is even more complicated due to their own long-term romantic relationship.

WHO’S IN IT?

Reuniting Closer co-stars Julia Roberts (as Claire) and Clive Owen (as Ray) turns out to be an inspired idea. They turn out to be the perfect pair oozing movie-star charm and electricity in this elaborate con-game that might have been the kind of thing Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant might have made in the '60s (in fact they did, in Charade). Roberts, with that infamous hairstyle back the way we like it and Owen, looking great in sunglasses, prove they have what it takes to navigate us through this ultra-complex plot in which no one is sure who they can trust at any given moment. They play it all in high style, and the wit just flows as the story skirts back and forth during the period of five years. The supporting cast is well-chosen with juicy roles for Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti (out of their John Adams duds) as the two CEOs going for each other’s throats. Giamatti, who sometimes has a tendency to overdo it, is especially slimy here and great fun to watch.

WHAT’S GOOD?

Big-star studio movies today rarely take risks and often talk down to the audience, but in Duplicity, writer/director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) has crafted a complicated con-comedy that requires complete attention at all times just to keep up with the dense plot’s twists and turns. It’s the cinematic equivalent of a New York Times crossword puzzle and Gilroy and his top-drawer production team deliver a glossy, beautiful-looking film that’s easy on the eyes, hitting locations from Dubai to Rome to New York City.

WHAT’S BAD?

Like any good puzzle, it sometimes can be frustrating putting it all together, and Gilroy’s habit of taking us back in time and then inching forward gets a little confusing, even with the on-screen chyron pointing out where we are at any given moment. Stick with it though, and you will be well-rewarded.

FAVORITE SCENE:

A scene near the end where the formula must be found, scanned and faxed in a matter of minutes, is sweat-inducing, edge-of-your-seat moviemaking, and it provides the ultimate opportunity for Roberts and Owen to take the “con” to the next level. Another where Roberts uses a thong to try and trick Owen into admitting an affair he never had is also priceless and gets right to the heart of the game-playing.

GO OUT AND GET POPCORN WHEN ...

Never. Stock up during the coming attractions. If you miss a moment of this entertaining romp you might never figure it all out.
